NGATS-Airspace Test Facility at NASA Glenn Research Center

  1. Modeling, Simulation and Emulation Environments
    1. Software simulation of CNS systems and technologies
      1. Extensive development of models and simulation capabilities for advanced terrestrial and satellite-based communications (VDL-2, VDL-3, Iridium, INMARSAT) and ADS-B systems (UAT, Mode S)
    2. Model development
      1. Development of CNS models for VAST (enumerate)
    3. Virtual Aircraft and Controller (VAC)
      1. An emulation tool combining air traffic loading simulation with real VDL-2 radio/ground station to enable traffic loading performance testing
      2. Includes CPDLC, ADS, TIS and CDTI display

    Modeling, simulation and emulation environment for CNS will provide capability for analysis of RTSP requirements and interaction with ATS system performance.

  2. Airport Surface and Airport Regional Control Operations Testbed
    1. Surface wireless network testbed being integrated into a real airport environment at CLE
    2. Integration of 3 airports (Cleveland Hopkins, Burke Lakefront and Lorain County Regional) through hybrid wireless communications to enable testing of regional air traffic control concepts.
    3. Working with FAA/Tech Center to integrate SWIM testbed with GRC Airport Surface Testbed to test information access and transfer between SWIM and real facilities.

    Combination of GRC Testbed and mobile testbed facilities with FAA Tech Center’s SWIM testbed and aircraft test facilities, and additional integration with other NASA ATM concept development/evaluation facilities, will create a very powerful NGATS concept evaluation/validation capability.

  3. CNS Test/Evaluation Facilities
    1. VDL Mode 2 and 3, UAT, 1090ES radios and ground stations
      1. Used extensively in previous weather and security tests and demonstrations
    2. Aero-satcom airborne and ground stations
    3. Ground mobile testbed
      1. Used to simulate an airborne platform for CNS and networking technologies. Equipment includes GPS and ring-laser gyroscope for navigation, VHF and L-band transceivers, 802.11 LAN with Cisco Systems router and adequate A/C and D/C power. Applications tested include CPDLC, Ring Buffered Network Bus (RBNB) network, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), live digital video and voice over IP.
    4. Air mobile testbed
      1. These stations and testbeds have been used extensively in previous airborne network R&D, mobility testing, satellite communications technology development and validation, weather and security testing and demonstrations. In particular, the Weather Information Communication (WINCOMM) Project developed advanced communication networks and data links for the dissemination of weather data to and from the cockpit of commercial transport, regional and GA aircraft. WINCOMM successfully simulated, modeled, developed and demonstrated through a series of flight tests communication data links and architectures and achieved data rates that were 20 to 100 times greater than that which is currently operational in the 2005 NAS.
    5. Secure communications Laboratory

    CNS test/evaluation facilities provide a real test environment for NGATS concepts.

  4. Mobile Information Network Research Facilities
    1. IP (v4, v6) protocol research laboratory
      1. Has provided significant advances in network protocol development.
    2. Mobile LAN/WAN test facilities
      1. Partnerships with DoD to test and demonstrate network mobility for military applications
    3. Virtual Mission Operations Center

    Mobile information network research facility provides a research and test capability for NGATS network oriented information access and network enabled operations.
